Notice of Damage

For individual coverage

When a natural phenomenon affects one of their insured crops, producers must notify La Financière agricole immediately. If not, they could lose the right to all indemnities.

For collective coverage

Generally, when a natural phenomenon affects any of their productions that are insured under crop insurance, producers do not need to send a notice of damage.

However, if the damage is caused by a spot loss risk (individual), producers must send a notice of damage. Spot loss risks include:

  • Flooding;
  • Freezing of grain corn and fodder corn that occurs after the limit dates (refer to coverage summaries);
  • Hail;
  • Hurricanes and tornadoes;
  • Snow when seeding takes place before the limit dates for all insured crops, except for hay;
  • Uncontrollable insects and diseases;
  • Wild animals against which there is no adequate means of protection, with the exception of the waterfowl provided for through the damage compensation plan under the Federal-Provincial AgriInsurance Agreement.

Notice of Damage: Four Elements

A notice of damage must include the following four elements:

  • Affected crop;
  • Cause of damage;
  • Affected area;
  • Date of damage.
Important deadline

Producers must send in the notice of damage before harvesting the damaged production.

The minimum delay for a notice of damage is 2 working days before harvesting begins so that an appraisal can be made while the crop is still standing.
