Almost 40 people from our agency took time off last Saturday to harvest vegetables, on a purely volunteer basis, at the produce farm Moissonneurs Solidaires. What a great family activity! Our team harvested 16,500 pounds of leeks that will be transformed into 66,000 food servings.
The volunteer operation gathered young and old folks alike for one cause: to provide support, in a practical way, to an organization whose mission is to reduce social inequalities. It was in that spirit that participants rolled up their sleeves and, in a common effort, gave their time and energy for people in need.
It is noteworthy that, every month, Québec’s food banks respond to over 1.6 million requests for aid. From 2008 to 2014, that number rose by 23%. Community support services increasingly need more food to meet the demand, including fresh produce for individuals and families living in poverty. The organization Moissonneurs Solidaires has taken on that mission.
Numbers that speak volumes
The 2015-2016 season of Moissonneurs Solidaires in numbers:
- Over 1,500 volunteer harvesters;
- 458,334 kg of vegetables distributed;
- 4,500,000 portions for people in need;
- Over 30 organizations served.
We are proud to have contributed to this activity, helping to support people in need!
Our thanks to Class!c Traiteur that graciously provided meals to our volunteers during the operation!
